It’s been a whirlwind of activity around the farm.  Within the last two months, I finalized the City Farming book contract with 5M Publishing, found new homes for our goats and sheep, looked at colleges with our high school senior, celebrated our eldest daughter’s engagement, and booked venues for fall Grow Phx events….whew!

In and between all of the busyness, I have had the pleasure of visiting some awesome urban farms and interviewing amazing farmers for the City Farming project.  This week, Jill Green of Sweet Life Garden gave me a tour of her Arcadia property.  This is not the first time that I have visited the garden, and I am always awed by its beauty and productivity.  Even in the hot Arizona summertime, it is gorgeous (not at all crispy and brown, like my own personal garden.)

What challenges do you face in your garden or on your urban farm?

In Arizona, extreme temperatures, the ongoing drought and HOA regulations top the list of questions that we receive from our readers and students.  Every climate presents its own particular obstacles to growing and raising food, and urban farms have unique complications related to growing in populated areas.

Visiting farms is my favorite pastime, and I am continually delighted to discover the creative ways that folks face the challenges associated with growing and raising food in the city.  Ranging from the simplest solutions to complex systems, urban farmers not only overcome obstacles, but also come up with ingenious methods to actually exploit regional challenges to their benefit.
